PROTECTING THE FUTURE

One of our company policies includes sustainable agricultural practices that are intended to protect the environment, expand the earth's natural resource base, and maintain and improve soil fertility targeting our producers (seed growers) and our consumers. It is based on a multi-pronged approach which seeks to meet current or present day society's food and industrial needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

Our sustainable agriculture policy integrates three main goals namely:
1. Environmental Health
2. Economic Profitability
3. Social and Economic Equity

ENV

Environmental Health & Stewardship

We protect the environment by maintaining soil quality, reducing soil degradation and erosion, and saving water. Sustainable agriculture increases biodiversity of the area by providing a variety of organisms with healthy and natural environments to live in. The research arm of the company is also developing drought tolerant varieties of maize and sorghum. As a company we stand to continuously promote environmental stewardship through the use of minimum chemical control for pest and diseases in our seed growers plots, nurseries and trials as well as commercial crop production.

ECO

Economic Profitability

We practice and train our seed growers and farmers the need for crop diversity to mitigate on crop failure or individual crop enterprise poor performance due to market price fluctuations of agriculture commodities. This is also seen in the range of quality seed products we sell  from vegetable seed of onions, tomatoes, kale, watermelons, eggplants, amaranths, black night shade, butternuts  to seed of field crops like maize, beans, sorghum, cowpeas for farmers’ production and crop diversity. We also have hybrids and open pollinated varieties for increased farmer selection and choice.

EQI

Social & Economic Equity

We encourage women and youth in agriculture and give them equal opportunity for excelling and in decision making. Young female adults are and middle management positions in all our departments including sales & marketing, research & development. This is also complimented by fair wages and improved labour conditions which are better than the average being offered in the country’s agriculture sector. We conduct training programs for youth and women empowerment in agriculture, and encourage school visits to our Thika farm experiencing farming with our agronomists.
